Clip description

The Reverend Cyril Maitland (John Longden) and his best friend, Dr Everard (John Warwick) go to the beach after visiting the home of Alma Lee (Charlotte Francis). Alma approaches the pastor as he fishes alone on the point. He resists her advances, because he is already engaged to marry Everard’s sister Marion (Patricia Minchin).

Curator’s notes

Longden and Francis were both experienced English actors (Longden having worked with Alfred Hitchcock in Britain), but Ken Hall was still relatively inexperienced with actors. The dialogue is sometimes stilted but Hall’s capacity to enliven a scene with sly humour is very evident in this scene – especially in the hilariously suggestive use of the fishing rod.
