Clip description

Mr Jonathon’s dancers have had ten minutes to regroup after Tenille has collapsed on stage in the grand final. Their routine leaves the audience gasping – especially Miss Elizabeth (Jane Hall), who’s appalled at the political grandstanding in Mr Jonathon’s choreography. The judges (Noeline Brown, Toni Lamond and Leo Sayer) look both alarmed and intrigued, but Mr Jonathon is intensely proud. Tiny Grace (Clancy Ryan) steps up into the limelight, as the new star of the show.

Curator’s notes

Some of the ideas in the script are as old as the movie musical itself – notably the rise of the new star Grace, after the fall of the existing diva Tenille – but they’re carried off with great conviction and joy, as if they’ve never been done before. The fact that Mr Jonathon’s routine is so good and so funny is a surprise and a delight because, like him, the audience has never been sure if he really has any talent.
