Thomas Newman’s ethereal score, production designer Luciana Arrighi’s stunning glass-and-metal structure and Geoffrey Simpson’s beautiful photography make this a magical moment in Oscar and Lucinda. All the more powerful for being virtually wordless, this sequence evokes mixed emotions; there is sheer wonder at the sight of a church floating down a river, and a sense of foreboding as Oscar sits inside like a trapped animal while several glass panels crack and shatter around him.
