John (Mark Constable) tells wife Emily (Victoria Hill) he needs to help uncle Tom by righting wrongs of the past. Unaware that son Edward (Wiiliam Traegar) is listening, Emily angrily tells John that uncle Tom is dead.
Curator’s notes
The brief shot of Edward near the end of this sequence brings home the destructive impact of his father’s mental imbalance. As John rambles on about the bullets he’s found and how he’s going to save Tom, his wife Emily realises that the John she knows is drifting away. By not revealing until the very end that Edward has heard everything, the quick shot of his pained reaction delivers strong emotional punch. John’s problems are now threatening to shatter his family.
