Clip description

At the isolated farmhouse he has inherited, John (Mark Constable) hears voices from his past. He asks wife Emily (Victoria Hill) and son Edward (William Traegar) to stay at a motel while he sorts things out.

Curator’s notes

Modern Love uses dislocated sounds to enter the mind of John. In this quietly played scene, John hears the first of many voices from the past that will eventually trigger his personality change. The atmosphere of unease is heightened by John’s very ordinary conversation with Emily and Edward. Light-hearted talk of them being treated to a ‘holiday’ in a motel conceals the real reason he wants to be alone.
