Clip description
Vick-Anne (Rebecca Frith) surprises Ken Sherry (George Shevtsov) with a preview of her wedding dress. He is brutal in his response to her excitement. Dimity (Miranda Otto) is bewildered when her sister takes off through the streets of Sunray, heading for the grain silo.
Curator’s notes
Shirley Barrett’s direction reaches a lyrical, almost surreal pitch in this sequence, in which a visual anomaly – the dress, in these dusty streets – perfectly matches the tragi-comic situation. Vicki-Anne’s fantasies have crumbled; Dimity tries to protect her sister, but she’s completely baffled by this outburst of spontaneous emotion. Barry White’s leering lyrics make the whole thing more incongruously powerful, even as it is banal.
