Clip description

Vicki-Anne (Rebecca Frith) is horrified to see that her sister Dimity (Miranda Otto) has come home late one night with Ken Sherry (George Shevtsov). Vicki-Anne bangs on Sherry’s front door, interrupting their attempt to get intimate. Dimity rushes home and hides, but Vicki-Anne demands an explanation.

Curator’s notes

A good example of the stunted relationship between the sisters, which Rebecca Frith turns into a richly comic moment. Vicki-Anne is an avid reader of gossip magazines, which is why she knows about Ken Sherry’s disastrous marriages. She considers herself worldly, which Frith communicates simply by calling him Kenneth, rather than Ken. She is only dimly aware of her own jealous panic at seeing her sister’s advances on the man she thinks she loves – and her self-deprecation makes the scene touching as well as funny. She’s right – Dimity is odd, but it’s increasingly clear that she may be a lot saner than Vicki-Anne, whose personality has become warped by the loneliness of this town.
