clip 'People die out in this country'

Original classification rating: M. This clip chosen to be PG

Clip description

Bogged and stranded a long way from help, Sandy (Toni Collette) asks Hiromitsu (Gotaro Tsunashima) if she can borrow his phone, because she has no signal. He is reluctant to let anyone know they are lost. She explains how bad their situation is. He wants to walk to find help – he feels it is his responsibility.

Curator’s notes

The misunderstandings in the film, which are a large part of the film’s considerable comedy, are not just cultural, but about gender. Hiromitsu wants to behave as a man should, by going off to find help. He is also desperate not to lose face, by letting her call for help. Note the rising panic in Toni Collette’s voice as she tries to make clear how dangerous the situation is, and that it’s way beyond questions of ego.
