Curator’s notes
Into the Straight mixes melodrama with horse racing. In this sequence Sam Curzon confesses to stealing from his father to pay gambling debts and his sister, June, attempts to walk again. The use of swelling music and the sudden appearance of a figure who inspires the heroine to overcome the odds (in this case Hugh) are typical devices employed in melodramas of the era. The doctor’s optimistic comment about June’s recovery reminds us that everything concerning the Curzon family eventually comes back to horse racing.
