Evelyn Spence (Maya Stange) takes the side of the villagers against Reverend Macgregor (John Howard) at a funeral because he wants them to use the Christian graveyard and change their usual practices. Upon her return home, she and Dr Phillip Spence (Martin Donovan) fight bitterly.
Curator’s notes
Evelyn’s forthright nature and independence do not suit the times and she is becoming increasingly isolated from those around her. Her behaviour causes her to come into conflict with most of the other Westerners, including her husband and former lecturer, who puts his work above all else and never accepts her as an equal.
