The Home Song Stories (2007)

It's interesting that Ayres, The Home song Stories and Gaita's tale Romulus, My Father both were released in the same year. They render the angst of a disfunctional childhood vividly. Having left both in tears (and I rarely cry in films) I kept consoling myself with the fact that these autobiographical narratives had somewhat "happy endings" in that the boys grew to be men who could make their fellow Australians and the world reflect on the issues they raised. That's empowerment.
