Bored with matters of state, Tommy (George Wallace) tries to interest his footmen in a game of cards. He has to order them to take part, and to stay seated. He makes the rules up as he goes.
Curator’s notes
A classic Wallace routine, done with a minimum amount of cutting – or indeed, much finesse in the camera work (note the abrupt reframing left and right to capture the action). Wallace’s enjoyment of the scene is obvious, but in character – Tommy is lonely and playing cards makes him feel less isolated.
