Clip description

Incensed that his father has given him a raise with one hand and taken it away with the other, Dave (Fred MacDonald) and his wife Lil (Lilias Adeson) gather the other brothers, Joe (William McGowan) and Dan (George Lloyd), for a deputation to tell off their father. Mrs Rudd (Peggy Yeoman) tries to calm things down, but tempers fray and Dave leads a walk-out. In private Grandad expresses his regrets for driving his son Dave away, but Dave is behind a pillar listening to every word.

Curator’s notes

Most of the subtext in the film is about money, which may have been preoccupying Ken Hall when he made it. The Cinesound Studio had a permanent staff which had to be kept at work. If a film lost money, as Strike Me Lucky had done, there was a real chance that it might have to reduce staff or even close. In the midst of the Depression, this was a terrible burden for Hall to carry – which partly explains why he concentrates on broad and tested forms of comedy in this film. He was desperate to make a hit and keep his studio afloat.
