Clip description
The captain (Steve Vidler) has reluctantly accepted control of a ship that is to be sunk at sea, for insurance. On the dock he meets the surly crew members – all of whom know the score. Chief officer Heckle (John Brumpton) shows his contempt for his new superior.
Curator’s notes
The scene introduces the players, and some elements that will be used in the plot – including the drums of combustible carbide and the model aeroplane. Note the modern version of romantic 1940s noir lighting – rainy streets, sultry shadows, dark backgrounds.
