Clip description

Jimmy (Ned Manning) and Carmen (Natalie McCurry) are told by drive-in manager Thompson (Peter Whitford) they must stay overnight.

Curator’s notes

Never one to miss an opportunity to promote his films, director Brian Trenchard-Smith shows Carmen watching the notorious Turkey Shoot (1982). The scene opens humorously, with Jimmy having to drag Carmen away – ‘I have to see the end’, she says. What follows is far from funny. Unaware the drive-in is actually a prison, Jimmy thinks Thompson is just giving him the usual run-around about his stolen wheels. A time-lapse transition shot of the drive-in sign from night into day brings with it the terrible truth. Ned and Carmen’s reaction is a good example of an ‘oh my god’ moment in the movies.
