While Hughie (Billy Zane) plays with the dog on deck, Rae (Nicole Kidman) discovers via radar and radio that her husband John (Sam Neill) is still alive. Rae and John re-establish communication, using his sailor’s knowledge of radio and her common sense.
Curator’s notes
The scene has a metaphorical resonance, as well as advancing the plot. It’s the end of the period of their lack of communication as husband and wife, isolated in grief. They still can’t talk, but they understand each other. Their relationship is renewed, and Rae discovers her resolve.
