Clip description

Harry and Kate have flushed all their medications down the toilet. In the supermarket, Harry (John Lynch) is upset when the price of a baby stroller he wants to buy has been discounted. He makes most of his decisions based on the combination of numbers, rather than the price. He wants to pay full price, but the shop assistant (Sam Johnson) doesn’t understand. When Kate (Jacqueline McKenzie) is knocked down by a speeding kid on rollerblades (Marcus Macris), she is distressed that some of her blood is spilled. Harry must chase the kid to retrieve the lost blood.

Curator’s notes

The mania begins here, after Harry has persuaded Kate that they’re better off without medication. The disappearing pills in the toilet turn into the revolving wheel on Wheel of Fortune They are indeed about to spin that wheel. The mounting sense of terror in the supermarket beings with the camera dollying up past the long line of registers, with the action slightly speeded up. The place seems like an alien environment, full of feral teenagers and dark spaces, at least to Kate, who has a morbid fear of anyone getting a sample of her blood. That is how they can get control of you, she believes.
