At a bus stop, old school friends Phaedra (Susan Prior) and Tia (Olivia Pigeot) run into each other for the first time in ages. They chat away, catching up with what they’ve been up to in the intervening period.
Curator’s notes
The scene not only introduces Phaedra but also imparts some important information about her and Tia. Expository scenes like this can so easily feel awkward and artificial but this scene benefits from remarkably unselfconscious acting and deadpan humour.
Notice how the two woman initially chat on either side of a baseball cap-wearing male (played by director Middleton) as if he’s not there.
