The White Monkey (1987)
Synopsis
This documentary biography follows Father Brian Gore as he works among the poor on the island of Negros in the Philippines. In his fight for social justice he was imprisoned, along with eight others, on trumped up charges by the Marcos Government. After six months the ‘Negros Nine’ were found not guilty.
Curator’s notes
Father Gore notes, ‘Christianity is radical, living the gospel is radical, and it is not the job of priests to be hijacked by conservatives whose main goal is to use Catholicism as a weapon of social control.’ Consequently he clashed with the Marcos Government of the time.
Filmmaker Curtis Levy has captured the essence of Father Gore’s humanity and commitment in this observational documentary. Curtis Levy’s credits include The President Versus David Hicks, High Noon in Jakarta, Riding the Tiger and Breakout.
