A Voice for the Wilderness (1983)

Synopsis

This documentary was produced in 1983 as part of a popular movement to save the rainforest of the Upper Hastings River and the Forbes River inland from Port Macquarie NSW. One of many pro-conservation films produced during the 1980s, it depicts the clash between the demand for jobs in the logging industry and the desire by conservationists to preserve virgin rainforest.

Curator’s notes

A lyrical voice-over sings the praises of the wilderness in general, and individual species of trees in particular, describing the virtues and value of the wilderness to humankind. The camera’s lingering pans convey the beauty and majesty of the 'gentle giants’ of the forest.

Filmmaker Christina Wilcox has produced and directed many documentaries including two biographies, It’s Ruth about actress Ruth Cracknell, and the award-winning docudrama, The Night Belongs to the Novelist, about writer Elizabeth Jolley.
