Clip description
At the Oasis youth centre, Captain Paul Moulds of the Salvation Army refuses to cash a cheque for a disturbed young man who threatens to burn the place down. The young man has to be restrained. Moulds then speaks about how the kids are tough to deal with, about what some of them have endured, and why they shouldn’t be discounted. Haley, one of the kids at the centre, says she’s on drugs every day, hates using and realises she is slowly disappearing.
Curator’s notes
This clip shows a small part of Moulds’s everyday existence and really sets the scene for the rest of the film. He deals patiently and calmly with kids that have big problems. While he never seems to get flustered, angry or lash out, he is tough and speaks his mind.
