Les Murray talks of his formative years as a poet – his discovery of Australian poetry while at school, his time as a student at the University of Sydney, teaching himself to write and meeting other poets in coffee shops.
Curator’s notes
In his unassuming way, in recounting his autobiography, Murray gives us entree to what it is to be inspired to discover one’s creative powers. He states matter-of-factly at the end of the clip that, ‘By the time I’d finished my degree I was already subject matter in various courses’. So even though he wasn’t very good at exams, as he says, he’d certainly learnt well.
