Super 8 Soldiers (1991)
Synopsis
In the 1960s a group of Australian conscripts took 8 mm cameras to Vietnam. Super 8 Soldiers intercuts that footage with interviews with the men and their families in the early 1990s. The Vietnam veterans reflect on the war, the protest movement and their return home to Victoria.
Curator’s notes
The quality of the 8 mm film is at times poor but the conscripts’ recollections and perspective are a valuable piece of Australian history.
Director Mark Worth died prematurely in 2004. He made documentaries in the Asia Pacific region, most of them in Papua New Guinea. His last film was Land of the Morning Star (2004).
Writer Luke Davies went on to write the screenplay for Candy (2006) as well as the novel it was based on.
