Clip description

Peter Garrett visits the untouched Shoalwater area with Army major Sam Hassall. They examine the sands that are proposed for mining. The sand contains iluminite, rutile and titanium used in the manufacture of white paint. Footage of sandmining in New South Wales is shown. Garrett thinks the Shoalwater area will be similarly devastated if mining is permitted.

Curator’s notes

Garrett and the Army major are clearly getting along, which seems to support Garrett’s position. The use of the NSW mining footage contrasts effectively with the beautiful footage of the Shoalhaven.
