Clip description
Over footage of Cindy as a 17-year-old, we hear Cindy five years on, talking about what she has done since completing her HSC. She lists working in St George doing seasonal work; moving to Tenterfield to live with her birth father; and being the first Aboriginal girl to go in the Miss Tenterfield beauty pageant. Eventually Cindy moves back home and has a baby daughter named Kiama.
Curator’s notes
Cindy is a bright, intelligent personality who as a teenager aspired to much. How the characters negotiate their life challenges is fundamental to the life they have come to live. Cindy, even in her youth, takes responsibility for the choices she has made and their consequences. The passing on of dreams to their children is a common theme that emerges in this film; and of wanting to be a better person for the sake of their children.
Directed by Ivan Sen who went on to make Beneath Clouds, the clip uses a very effective style of fast-paced editing, jump cutting the colour interview footage with the same footage converted to black-and-white and treated in various ways, and interesting framing. It’s a 'young’ style which works perfectly with the subject matter.
