Clip description
May Pennefather, a nurse, volunteers to go to help the republican forces in Spain fight the overthrow of the government by a nationalist military coup.
Curator’s notes
Although all three women featured in Red Matildas became political organisers and activists, May Pennefather was one of only a small contingent of Australian nurses who volunteered to go to Spain to provide medical assistance during the civil war. She tells us of her impressions of Spain on her arrival over film footage of Spain at the time. Most importantly we get an insight into May’s personality and her courage and conviction as she embarks on what will be a very dangerous mission.
