Rare and colourful characters

Original classification rating: not rated. This clip chosen to be G

Clip description

We meet the people and chickens who will populate the film and get a glimpse of the unusual ride we’re about to embark on.

Curator’s notes

In the set-up to meeting Mark and establishing the style of the documentary, the filmmakers have been influenced by Mark Lewis’s film Cane Toads – An Unnatural History (1987). The clip sets the tone of the film. It is going to be a fun ride full of rare and unusual people as well as lots of chickens. We are introduced to these characters through quirky interviews, mad graphics and live birds who look like they’re straight out of Star Wars (1977). All stare at us straight down the lens.

Then we meet Mark, the hero of the film, who reveals that he’s been depressed but has been saved by the birds he breeds. The stage is set for him to spell out his mission to save them in return. The scene of him talking to the turkeys and them talking back is a wonderful surprise and prepares us for a film that will be funny as well as moving.
