Prahran 3181: Swimming in the Backyard (2001)

Synopsis

The film covers the construction and subsequent use of the suburban public swimming pool in Prahran, Melbourne. Jim has worked there as manager for 37 years. The pool has become the focus of a community of diverse people, old, young, gay, mothers and fathers. The atmosphere is inclusive and friendly. The documentary features interviews, people enjoying themselves and a sense of the mood of social inner Melbourne.

Curator’s notes

A simple documentary subject matter – life at a swimming pool. The filmmakers have captured the social interaction of the regulars and the sense of community. The film is stylish and delightful. It is a good example of effective filmmaking with a simple premise.
