Clip description

This clip features an aerial view of river and coastal landscape, with the seaplane landing on the water. Hundreds of people come out to meet Hurley in their canoes, encircling the plane. There is a shot of the villages beside the river taken from the boat, ending with an image of a very large longhouse building.

Curator’s notes

The sequence is some of the first aerial footage shot in Papua New Guinea, showing picturesque villages along the riverfront and a very large longhouse building. The lifestyle shown in this film changed over time, making these images extremely important to the descendants of the peoples and cultures in the film.
