Clip description
It is 1955 and the ship Joyita has disappeared in the Pacific Ocean. The narrator talks about the weather, the storms, the wet season, and the difficulty of predicting what might have happened to it. There is a lot of concern on shore: parents are praying for their son, the captain’s wife is very anxious and stands at the seaside searching the horizon.
Five weeks later, the Joyita has been found near a Fijian island and the policeman at his desk pores over maps. There is a re-enactment of the would-be rescuers approaching the ship – and finding absolutely nothing.
Curator’s notes
The re-enactments seem a little awkward in this clip but nevertheless work well with the narration and voice-over. The dialogue, sound effects and music all give very strong emotional signals of fear and foreboding.
