Our Park (1998)

Synopsis

Filmmaker Gillian Leahy filmed the activities over one year of the residents and other users of a park in front of her house. The documentary is chaptered in seasons and follows the residents’ actions to reach agreement and alter the park so that everyone is ‘happy’.

Curator’s notes

The documentary visits a micro-world where good intentions, endless consultation and tight-lipped ‘tolerance’ are progressively exposed. The local dogs, with names like Curly, Rebel, Miffy and Fudge, happily enjoy the park, while the residents progress from happily coexisting neighbours to enemies. The documentary starts placidly but as we get to know the main combatants it becomes compulsive viewing.
