Clip description
While Dr Nelson is seated, male villagers painted white and wearing leaf headdresses perform around him with an audience in the background. In voice-over and interview, Nelson tries to explain the ‘farce’ going on as a way for the villagers to convey their perception and understanding of the ‘Kiaps’ (whites).
Curator’s notes
The painted villagers in this farce are performing as real people and acting out real events. Nelson takes the villagers’ play-acting with good humour. It is hilarious to witness these villagers making fun of the Kiaps of the past. Nelson states that in the future it is the film crew who will become the objects of ridicule and imagines how the villagers might possibly re-enact the filming in a similar farce.
