Clip description
This clip considers whether filmmakers and funding agencies should take some of the blame for the industry’s problems because they make the kinds of films that Australians don’t want to see. Industry figures interviewed include Brendan Cowell, Phillip Adams, Alan Finney and Bruce Beresford.
Curator’s notes
This is one of the film’s most lively and compelling sections. The debate over who’s responsible for the problems of the Australian film industry generally see-saws between two positions – structural issues versus the accusation that funding agencies and filmmakers produce films that don’t interest audiences. To its credit this documentary airs both sides.
Observers often say the Australian film industry has a tendency to avoid exposing itself to too much self-criticism for fear of offending government. That’s not true here, where the criticisms of the industry aired are thoughtful, sharply expressed and come from credible sources.
