Clip description
In the early 1970s the Aborigines in the north west of Western Australia were finally able to buy their own properties. They initially struck for better pay and conditions and as a result they became graziers with cattle and sheep. They set up their own schools.
Curator’s notes
After the initial strike in 1946, many Aboriginals began mining the land to make a living. By the 1960s, this allowed some of them to buy some of the stations they had formerly worked on, as we see in this clip. It shows the importance of education, self-determination and community.
