Clip description
After six months back in El Salvador, Carlos Robles has been training farmers and ex-guerrillas to become teachers within their own communities. Carlos expresses to the camera what this work means to him. His wife Maria observes his work and the positive impact that Carlos is making in his own community.
Curator’s notes
For much of the film we witness Carlos’ discomfort with the camera and we get a sense that he has lost his sense of dignity in Australia (and hence his status in the family) where he is unable to contribute to society in the way he had hoped. It is only when we see Carlos back in El Salvador working on important community development projects that we realise the extent of his cultural isolation and frustration in Australia. Maria, who has come to visit him in El Salvador after six months apart, is proud of her husband but this poses a new dilemma for her – is it fair to ask him to return to Australia where he may not do that well when he is clearly making a positive grassroots impact on his community back in El Salvador?
