Clip description
An introduction to John Curtin, Australian prime minister, 1941–45.
Curator’s notes
An eye-opening introduction to this documentary about John Curtin. Using archival footage of the atomic bomb that forced Japan’s surrender in the Second World War, Curtin is identified as a great Australian wartime prime minister who had been a pacifist at the time of the First World War. Viewers are shown footage of Curtin delivering a speech in a manner that immediately justifies the ‘hellfire’ nickname. Curtin did not live to witness the total Allied victory in which he had played such an important role.
