Clip description
A group of divers explores the wreck of the ocean liner President Coolidge which sank in 1942 when carrying troops and equipment to Espiritu Santo, when she accidentally struck two allied mines. They have to be aware of the effects of nitrogen narcosis at this depth (40 metres).
Curator’s notes
Scuba diving has its own dangers like getting lost or disoriented as nitrogen narcosis takes effect. Filming underwater is a specialist area due to the lack of light and problems with water clarity.
