Nick-away Ned

This clip chosen to be PG

Clip description

Nick-away Ned (Jock Levy) is a proponent for shorter working hours … every day of the week! Ned sneaks off the job early, only to encounter more trouble than he bargained for. Meanwhile, a shipping owner lurks on the docks counting the number of workers. With Ned gone, the owner sees work getting done with one less man. He tells his legal counsel who advises, 'If five below can work that fast, the lot can work like this.’ We cut to sped-up footage of the men working in fast motion on the docks.

Curator’s notes

As with clip one, one worker’s misbehaviour discredits the union and brings hardship on the other workers. Each slip-up by a wharfie gives hostile societal forces like the mass media, judiciary and Big Business an opportunity to weaken the union. The message is clear: workers have to rely on each other and stick together.
