Clip description

Television presenter Ray Martin asks Norma Khouri if she believes she would be killed if she returned to Jordan. In another interview, Norma defends some of her ‘untruths’ in the book. This is intercut with David Leser, watching the interview on computer, responding to her claims. There are also interviews with Khouri’s husband John, her friend Rachel Richardson and journalist Malcolm Knox, who exposed Khouri and speaks about her two children.

Curator’s notes

This is a good example of how the story is told by many voices, with Norma Khouri centre stage continuously and stridently defending her actions. This clip also shows the technique of presenting one person’s interview to another interviewee and capturing their response. Leser passionately feels Khouri’s biggest, dirtiest lie was disowning her own children. Khouri’s husband admonishes Knox for ‘outing’ the children and Knox replies that you can’t be responsible for every consequence of what you do as a journalist. This statement is worth thinking about.
