Clip description

A group of women talk about their experiences with the Leahy brothers. They describe how, as young women, their people sold them to the Leahy brothers for sexual purposes.

Curator’s notes

Highlanders came to the Leahy brothers to sell their young women for sex in exchange for shells and steel axes, which were highly valued commodities. The women remember their relationships with the Leahys with humour and no blame. Quite a few children were born from these liaisons with Michael Leahy. He didn’t seem to take any responsibility for his offspring and left the women to raise the children on their own.
