Facing the Demons (1999)

Synopsis

Young Michael Marslew was shot dead in an armed robbery of a Pizza Hut in Jannali NSW. The four offenders were jailed for up to 18 years. In 1998 two of the offenders and Michael’s family and friends attended a restorative justice group. Facing the Demons includes interviews with the family and offender Karl Kramer before the group meeting and then films the meeting itself. Some police video evidence is included.

Curator’s notes

A moving look at the repercussions of a violent crime on both victims and perpetrators. Two of the four perpetrators and the victim’s family and friends granted full access to this cathartic event, and it makes compelling viewing. The use of multiple cameras ensures that significant reactions can be captured while people are speaking, and that the camerawork does not intrude on the event. Music composed by Jan Preston effectively evokes the sadness and regret felt by all involved.
