Clip description
The village ‘griot’ plays his instrument at night near the fire and sings about gold and inequality. A farmer bends over, working his stony fields, then speaks frankly in front of his home about how everyone in the village – men, women and children – either work in the field or pan for gold.
Curator’s notes
This griot is one of the storytellers in the film. He reappears several times, helping the narrative along in a poetic way. The old farmer working in his field is the chief of one of the villages that had to be physically moved from the main development area. This is a real hardship for them all and especially for him as chief. The two men set the scene in the film from the villagers’ point of view.
