A Breath (1998)

Synopsis

Artists Huang Miaozi and Yu Feng migrated to Australia in 1989. The Chinese octogenarian couple reflect upon their life in the 20th Century. They were artists in China during Japanese invasion, the Great Depression and several revolutions. Their survival and joie de vivre are celebrated in this emotional documentary.

Curator’s notes

Writer, director, co-producer Christopher Tuckfield successfully mixes archival footage, family photographs and dramatic re-creations to tell the biography of the octogenarians. Eastern sensibilities imbue the work as we are reminded that each ink stroke of calligrapher Huang Miaozi’s brush is compared to a breath.
