At a big gathering, people are stunned and grieving. Madang, one of Joe’s main adversaries regarding the plantations, has been killed. In interview, a very distraught Joe Leahy laments what is going on and having no choice but to leave PNG.
Curator’s notes
The amount of time the camera holds on both Popina Mai, Joe’s right-hand Ganiga man, and Joe Leahy himself during this grieving process allows the viewer time to really contemplate what might be going on in their thoughts. It is a particularly poignant segment of the film.
