The beef cattle industry

This clip chosen to be G

Clip description

This clip features scenes on a cattle station including the herding of cattle, bull riding, cattle passing through a trough, mustering, stockmen setting up camp and cattle inoculation.

Curator’s notes

This clip is a good example of how Donkin presents an overview of each industry he surveys to give an impression of life on the land. The variety of activity shown here – from mustering to inoculation to bull riding – would have been of great interest to the English schoolchildren to whom Donkin screened it. The woman herding the cattle at the opening of the clip would have also showed Australian women as having an important role on the land – one which Donkin was very familiar with in his own family history.
