Art (1974)

Synopsis

A personal point-of-view documentary about the meaning of art by cartoonist and animator, Bruce Petty. Petty uses his own drawings and other works of art to illustrate connections between art movements and historical and social change.

Curator’s notes

With its use of timeless artwork, and its creative use of animation, this amusing and thoughtful documentary is a good starter for students of art. It is also useful for showing how art comments on politics.

Bruce Petty is primarily a leading political cartoonist, but he has also produced an impressive body of satirical animated documentaries, including Australian History, Marx, the Academy Award-winning Leisure, Money, This Mad Century and Human Contraptions.
