Clip description

Jockey Bernie Cooper speaks to the owner of the racehorse Gentle Genius as she prepares to race it. The race starts, she pulls ahead, and the owners get very excited when she finishes in second place. Back in her change room, Bernie vents about not winning the race.

Curator’s notes

This is a very exciting race. The scene works well because it’s set up so that you know the race odds are 200 to 1 and edited to really feel the tension of the race. It feels very satisfying when Bernie wins second place and the horse wins $100,000. However, she knows she was very close to winning and is not happy with runner-up. As a viewer, it’s hard to understand her response. She is pleased though with her bumped-up earnings because of getting the ‘place’.
