Clip description

The Wydawakes take their portable Magnavox Wireless in the car so they all can enjoy the novel experience of listening to music on their way to a picnic.

Curator’s notes

Compared to contemporary car radios, the Magnavox Wirelesses seems absurd because of its large size.

The film is silent, posing an interesting challenge in advertising a radio. Intertitles are used extensively to describe the features of the wireless. For example, one intertitle inquires 'Will it work as we move along?’ to which the next replies, 'We have had concerts while travelling at 40 miles an hour!’ Another exclaims 'Compact! Light and easy to carry’. Also noteworthy is the distinctive and highly decorative font used on the intertitles.
