Australia Post – Lettergram (1988)

Synopsis

This is a set of three Australia Post television commercials (TVCs) promoting the Lettergram service.

Curator’s notes

Developments in electronic communication technologies revolutionised mail delivery in the 1980s. Australia Post’s E-Post service, launched on 21 October 1985, replaced the old telegram service with the Lettergram service. Where the telegram had used teleprinter technology, Lettergram used facsimile transmission technology.

Telegrams had not just been the sole method of transmitting an urgent message. The sending of a telegram had long been a customary practice in the celebration of significant family events like weddings and births. In these television commercials Australia Post attempts to link Lettergram in the mind of the viewer with the traditional uses of the telegram.
