Indigenous music breaks down barriers

'As a universal language music has the power to break down barriers and unite people – Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and non-Indigenous Australians alike.’

To mark National Reconciliation Week 2013, we’re showcasing Indigenous Australian musicians on the ASO homepage.

Follow the links below or on the homepage to listen to music by Kev Carmody, No Fixed Address, Warumpi Band and Yothu Yindi.

The music of No Fixed Address and Us Mob was immortalised in the landmark music film Wrong Side of the Road (1981). The NFSA’s digital restoration of the film will have its world premiere at the Sydney Film Festival on 14 June 2013.

The songs on our homepage – and the album by Vic Simms (pictured left) – are part of the NFSA’s National Registry of Recorded Sound. Nominations for 2013 additions to the Registry close on 1 June.
